Jeanette Rankin, 1880–1973

Stateswoman

In 1916, before women had the vote, Rankin became the first woman elected to the U.S. House. A devoted pacifist, she voted against U.S. entry into World War I and was the onlymember of Congress to oppose the declaration of war on Japan in 1941.
